Fern Creek flows from Fern Lake (9,530'), which in turn is fed from the Odessa Gorge and Odessa Lake at the base of Flattop and Notchtop mountains. The creek flows through a heavily forested canyon of Englemann Spruce and sub-alpine fir to meet with the Big Thompson River near The Pool. As it comes down the gorge it creates Fern Falls (8,800'), in winter a silenced ice fall covered with snow.
Fern Creek was named by Abner Sprague (or so he says) after the likeness of the swaying trees to giant ferns. Another story claims that it was named after the wife of Dr. J. Workman.
